How to play Ludo

  1. Start. Each player has four pieces in their yard. Roll a six to bring a piece out onto its start square.
  2. Move. Move a piece forward by the number you roll. A six gives you another roll, but three sixes in a row and you lose the third roll.
  3. Capture. Land on an opponent's piece and you send it back to its yard. Capturing earns you an extra roll.
  4. Stay safe. The start squares and the marked refuge squares are safe: nobody can be captured there.
  5. Go home. After a lap of the board, your pieces go up your own home lane. You need the exact roll to finish, and getting a piece home earns another roll. Get all four home first to win.

One die or two

Play the classic way with one die, or roll two dice and split them: use one die on one piece and the other on another, or both on the same piece.

Your house rules

Before the game, the host can choose to come out on a one instead of a six, switch the capture and home bonuses or the three-sixes rule on or off, and set a turn timer.

Ludo questions

Do you need a six to start in Ludo?

In the classic game, yes: you need a six to bring a piece out of your yard, and a six also gives you another roll. On Naija Table the host can also let pieces come out on a one.

How many people can play Ludo?

Ludo is for 2 to 4 players. In a two-player game, the players sit on opposite sides of the board.

Can you capture on a safe square?

No. Start squares and the marked refuge squares are safe, and pieces there can't be captured.
