Open Naija TableChess on Naija Table
Pick Play with AI and choose your opponent: Relaxed, Steady or Sharp. Play Ivory and move first, play Ebony, or let a coin flip decide. Or pick Pass and play: two people, one phone, and the board turns to face whoever is to move. Both work with no internet connection once you have opened Naija Table.
How the pieces move
| Piece | How it moves |
|---|---|
| King | One square in any direction. |
| Queen | Any number of squares in a straight line or diagonal. |
| Rook | Any number of squares in a straight line. |
| Bishop | Any number of squares diagonally. |
| Knight | In an L shape: two squares one way, then one to the side. It can jump over pieces. |
| Pawn | One square forward (two on its first move), and captures one square diagonally forward. |
Special moves
- Castling. Once per game, the king moves two squares towards a rook and the rook jumps over to the square beside it. Neither piece may have moved, the squares between must be empty, and the king may not be in, pass through or land in check.
- En passant. When a pawn moves two squares and lands beside an enemy pawn, that pawn can capture it as if it had moved one square, but only on the very next move.
- Promotion. A pawn that reaches the far side becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight: your choice.
Winning and draws
Put your opponent's king in check (under attack) so that it has no way out, and that is checkmate: you win. A player can also resign. The game is a draw by stalemate (no legal move, but not in check), when the same position comes up three times, after fifty moves each with no capture or pawn move, or when neither side has enough pieces left to checkmate.
